3 things South Africa must do to dominate Day 2 of the second SA versus IND 2024 Test

On the first day, 23 wickets were lost, and the visitors may have a small advantage at the moment.

After deciding to bat, South Africa were bowled for 55 runs, with Mohammed Siraj taking six wickets.

The Proteas then annihilated their opponents for 153 runs, with the final six wickets falling for 0 runs.

South Africa trail by 36 runs with seven wickets in hand on Day 1 at Stumps. What should their optimal strategy be on the second day if they want to win the series?

South Africa must accomplish three things to dominate Day 2 of the second IND versus SA Test.

    1. Dean Elgar should start the bowling with Nandre Burger

Despite having only played two Tests, Nandre Burger has emerged as South Africa’s second-most dangerous threat, after only Kagiso Rabada.

However, the left-armer was not handed the new ball ahead of Lungi Ngidi in India’s innings.

If all goes well for South Africa, they will need to attack India’s openers with Rabada and Burger in order to stay in the game.

Ngidi did end the game with a three-wicket over, but he battled the rest of the way.

Dean Elgar bowled the new ball to Burger in the second innings of the first Test after using Jansen in the first.

The same thing must occur this time around, providing the Proteas have runs to play with.

    2. South Africa must not allow India’s bowlers, notably Jasprit Bumrah, to relax

Surviving on the pitch in Cape Town is a challenging task. A ball with a batter’s name on it will come at some point, regardless of how good their defense is.

And history indicates that it will occur sooner rather than later.

Attacking and throwing the bowlers off their lengths is the optimal tactic. In the last session of Day 1, Markram, like India’s most successful batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, used a similar tactic.

South Africa will need to play aggressive cricket on Day 2 despite being 36 runs behind. They may proceed to Bumrah, the epicenter of the Indian assault.

If Bumrah goes for runs, Rohit may be left scratching his head, since Prasidh Krishna has struggled to hit the necessary lengths thus far.

    3. Aiden Markram has to get back to work…again

South Africa’s batters struggled in the early innings, with just David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne reaching double figures.

However, in the second essay, one individual refused to depart peacefully.

Aiden Markram has always been a warrior, and he demonstrated that in the previous practice with a thunderous drive off Jasprit Bumrah to get things going.

The first batter braved the storm, weathering 51 pitches and advancing undefeated to Stumps.

On Day 2, Markram will be critical for the hosts. He’ll have to start from scratch, and he’ll never be “set” in the center.

The 29-year-old’s shot-making ability and resolve, on the other hand, will be vital weapons for South Africa, whose middle order is clearly undercooked.
