The first openly gay councilors in Rio’s history were elected in 2016 by Miranda and his friend Marielle Franco Miranda largely addressed the problems facing the LGBT community and other underrepresented groups in Rio’s population. Since Franco was shot and killed in March 2018, Miranda and his family have been traveling in a bulletproof vehicle.
Miranda was chosen in 2018 to take the place of PSOL constable Jean Wyllys. Wyllys, a member of the LGBT community, said in January 2019 that he had fled the nation as a result of death threats. Wyllys was replaced in the Chamber of Deputies by Miranda, a PSOL member.

Miranda underwent treatment for a stomach infection on August 6, 2022, at Clinica San Vicente in Gávea. He then experienced a slew of subsequent infections, including sepsis. He spent nine months in the hospital’s intensive care unit before passing away on May 9, 2023, the day before he turned 38. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was among the Brazilian politicians to express sorrow at his passing.
