When I was a senior at Lincoln, I used to play my high school games at Eastern, and every time we would sell out the venue. It would be absurd if I could spread love over the city.‘
Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, where Bates excelled as a player, is only 18 minutes away from Eastern Washington. He was ranked No. 5 in the 2021 class after reclassifying, according to the Composite rankings of 247Sports.
Bates isn’t only transferring to Eastern Michigan for the chance to become a hometown hero. Bates stated that he valued having a good relationship with his coaches and teammates and that winning is his top priority in the same interview with On3 on May 2.

The Eagles aren’t exactly a dominant force, though. They had a 10-21 record in 2021–22 under new coach Stan Heath, and they haven’t had a winning campaign since going 22–13 in 2017–18.
