Fernando Alonso has stated that he will quit the sport as soon as he realizes that he cannot win a championship. The Spaniard is 40 years old and has signed a long-term deal with Aston Martin. In 2018, the driver lost interest in the sport, which led to his suspension from Formula One.
The 41-year-old has been absolutely stunning and incredibly impressive ever since his return to the sport in 2021. He will join Aston Martin in 2023, a team that wanted to try him out as their lead driver.
Alonso is still very fit and does amazing things on a race track, so he has shown no signs of slowing down. When motorsport.com inquired as to why he hasn’t retired yet, the Spaniard responded,
If I didn’t think we had a chance, I wouldn’t have continued competing. I will continue as long as I believe we have a chance, whether it’s 1% or 10%.”
Recently, F1 aficionado Stefano Domenicali stated that Alonso is a natural:
“You can discuss anything. For me, the most important thing is I hope Fernando stays in Formula 1. He has a lot of drive. Additionally, this year he demonstrated that age is not a barrier. He is a driver who is very competitive, very strong mentally, and very professional.”
Domenicali went on to say:
“It is also a pleasure for me to observe that with Carlos and Fernando, Formula One has regained its significance in Spain. Because Fernando is so ingrained in the sport of Formula One, I am not at all surprised. He maintains his motivation throughout.
Fernando Alonso receives praise from Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack, who recently stated that the Spaniard would be in the front row if all of the drivers on the grid drove the same vehicle. Krack stated,
He would be in the front row if everyone drove the same car. The most important thing right now is to get Fernando a car that can do this. He will put it where it belongs if we produce it.”
As he takes over for Sebastian Vettel and teams with Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso’s F1 season in 2023 will be interesting.
