The length of the rope that the BCCI is willing to give captain Rohit Sharma remains to be seen.
A review meeting will be held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following the Indian team’s loss to Bangladesh in two consecutive ODI series. When the team returns from its Bangladesh tour, the BCCI’s office bearers will meet coach Rahul Dravid, NCA chief VVS Laxman, Rohit, and former captain Virat Kohli.
After India’s loss to England in the T20 World Cup semifinals, the BCCI was supposed to hold a review meeting, but some officials were busy. However, BCCI officials are concerned about the 50-over World Cup that will be held in India in less than a year due to the two losses in Mirpur to Bangladesh, which is ranked seventh.
Since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013, India has not won a major ICC championship.
“Some of the office bearers were busy, so we were unable to meet the Indian team prior to going to Bangladesh; however, we will schedule it once the team returns from Bangladesh. A high-ranking BCCI official stated, “We didn’t expect this team to lose to Bangladesh. It has been an embarrassing performance.” It remains to be seen how much of a long rope the BCCI will give Rohit, the captain of the ODIs, given that Hardik Pandya is likely to take over as captain of the T20.
The tame manner in which India lost the semifinal to England (10-wicket win) is being seen as a major setback to India’s ambitions to win an ICC Trophy in white-ball cricket. Rohit did not have a good T20 World Cup with the bat.
The BCCI may want to keep Rohit as captain for the 50-over World Cup in India next year. Pandya is being trained for the T20 World Cup in West Indies and the United States in 2024. However, a BCCI official stated that the review meeting will provide a clearer roadmap for the future regarding captaincy. Despite having a year to plan, the Indian team did not appear T20-ready during the T20 World Cup in Australia.
The bowling lineup lacked express pace, had no effective finisher, had no wrist-spinner, and had pedestrian openers, among other flaws, on the Down Under team. Suryakumar Yadav, the No. 1 batsman in the T20 format, frequently saved India’s blushes with his big hits.
Due to the BCCI’s decision not to extend the terms of service of Chetan Sharma, Sunil Joshi, Debashish Mohanty, and Harvinder Singh, a new senior selection committee has not yet been appointed.
