Lewis Hamilton made history on Sunday as he secured his 92nd Grand Prix victory, breaking the record previously held by Michael Schumacher. The British driver, who races for Mercedes, has dominated the sport in recent years and his latest win at the Portuguese Grand Prix cemented his place as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time.
The race, which took place at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, was filled with drama as Hamilton battled it out with Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. The two drivers traded the lead multiple times, but in the end, it was Hamilton who crossed the finish line first, much to the delight of his team and fans.
Despite the pressure of trying to break Schumacher’s record, Hamilton remained calm and focused throughout the race, consistently posting fast lap times and making smart strategic decisions. His win was also aided by a strong performance from his teammate Valtteri Bottas.
Who finished in third place and helped secure valuable points for Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship.
While Hamilton’s record-breaking win was certainly the highlight of the weekend, there were plenty of other exciting moments in the Portuguese Grand Prix. One of the biggest surprises came from AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda, who secured his first-ever podium finish with a third-place finish. The Japanese driver has shown promising form throughout the season and his strong performance on Sunday will no doubt boost his confidence heading into the next round of the championship.
There was also drama in the midfield, as a collision between Lance Stroll of Aston Martin and Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing brought out the safety car. The incident, which occurred on lap 30, resulted in both drivers retiring from the race.
The Portuguese Grand Prix marked the seventh round of the 2021 Formula One World Championship, and with nine rounds remaining, there is still plenty of exciting racing to come. Mercedes currently lead the Constructors’ Championship with 191 points, followed by Red Bull Racing in second place with 148 points.
