Formula One: The FIA forbids participants in motorsports from making “political statements”

The general making and presentation of political, religious, and personal statements or opinions currently constitutes a violation of the general principle of neutrality espoused by the FIA, according to the organization’s International Sporting Code (ISC) addressing “breach of regulations.”

The WRC, WEC, and Formula One world championships are all governed by the FIA.

All comments must be “previously approved in writing by the FIA for international competitions or the competent ASN (National Sporting Authority) for National Competitions within their authority” as of January 1, 2023 “.

The kind of penalties that would result from breaking the regulations, however, was not made clear.

Several prominent Formula One drivers have openly supported causes during Grand Prix races in recent years, particularly by wearing or donning statements on their gear or helmets.

In reference to the fatal shooting of a black lady in her house by American police, Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, wore a T-shirt with the slogan “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” on the podium of the Tuscan Grand Prix in 2020.

During the post-race ceremonies, the FIA reviewed its procedure guidelines as a result of Hamilton’s activities.

German Sebastian Vettel protested Canada’s oil sands mining in a helmet during the Canadian Grand Prix more recently than he did in 2021 when he wore a T-shirt for the defence of gays during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The political neutrality of sport has been updated in conformity with this essential global ethical value of the Olympic Movement, which is inscribed in the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Code of Ethics, according to a statement released by the FIA on Tuesday.
