God of War Ragnarok: it does appear that the game canonizes Kratos’ appearance in Mortal Kombat 9

Although it is not as clear as some of the Easter eggs for God of War Ragnarok, it does appear that the game canonizes Kratos’ appearance in Mortal Kombat 9. Although this is not as clear as some of the Easter eggs, it does appear.

Easter eggs abound in God of War Ragnarok, such as Xavier’s poetry making allusions to PlayStation-exclusive games like Bloodborne, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, and others. Yes, it’s a nice touch, but Kratos’ time in Earthrealm is hints at one of the least expected references.

Kratos was a character for PS3 and PS Vita owners in Mortal Kombat 9 as many may recall. He has also made appearances in the battle royale game PlayStation All-Stars and Soul Calibur. While the latter is clearly canon, it is entirely possible that Kratos’ time in Mortal Kombat 9, Soul Calibur, and possibly even Fortnite is also officially canon, if not in the same way.

In God of War Ragnarok, Mimir will eventually inquire about Kratos’ participation in tournaments, describing a series of opponents that directly reference PlayStation All-Stars. But this conversation has some important context.

Kratos responds by stating that he fought in “many contests,” and the fact that Mimir distinguishes Kratos’ homeland from the tournament in question makes it abundantly clear that they are not discussing Greece.

This suggests that Kratos participated in numerous fights that were not held in Greece. Next, Mimir talks about PlayStation All-Stars, but some of these references could easily be characters from Mortal Kombat or Soul Calibur, so Kratos says he “would not speak of this.”

Because Kratos is who he is, it’s possible that he is simply avoiding discussing PlayStation All-Stars; however, his hesitation and response don’t really make much sense in this instance. However, considering how unlikely it is for Kratos in God of War Ragnarok to directly discuss Mortal Kombat.

Soul Calibur, or Fortnite without receiving significant royalties or entering into a contract, it is highly likely that the avoidance and numerous contests will, in turn, venerate his appearances in these franchises.

In any case, it has little effect on Kratos’s current state. Kratos was an enraged god-killer prior to the God of War Norse Saga who would work well in Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur; Maybe not as much right now. Nobody really wants Kratos to be made a saint for dancing in Fortnite.

What the God of War will do next is unknown, and even though it would be nice to see more crossovers, their canon remains largely ambiguous, if not impossible.

The PS4 and PS5 versions of God of War Ragnarok are now available.
