At this week’s Hong Kong Open, Lakshya Sen, the Commonwealth Games champion, will lead a small Indian team. On September 12, the Super 500 race in Kowloon began. The only top-20 singles player from India competing this week is World No. 13 since HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth have both chosen to withdraw from the competition. As she prepares for the Asian Games, which begin on September 23 in Hangzhou, China, PV Sindhu has also chosen to abstain. Sen will want to take advantage of this chance and play in a few meaningful matches before the big continental tournament. The eighth-seeded winner of the Canada Open will begin his campaign against Su Li Yang, a qualifier.

He is likely to face World No. 10 Anders Antonsen again in the second round after losing to him in the first round of the China Open last week. The other Indian in the men’s singles draw, Priyanshu Rajawat, will play Kanta Tsuneyama in the first round. Malvika Bansod and Aakarshi Kashyap, two young ladies from India, will compete in the women’s singles division. The World No. 17 Zhang Yi Man is Bansod’s opponent in the qualifying round, and Kashyap is the World No. 22.
