Kabaddi may appear to be a simply physical sport, but it is also incredibly strategic and tactical. To outsmart the enemy, the entire team must work as a unit, and the number of players engaging in the action varies depending on the sort of kabaddi in question.

Kabaddi, one of India’s original and most popular sports, is now generally played with seven players per side at any given time, with a minimum of three and a maximum of five substitutions.

The seven-player-per-side regulation governs traditional kabaddi. Although kabaddi can be played in a variety of styles, standard style kabaddi is the most frequent and desired format at the international level, with leagues such as Pro Kabaddi following the same template. Standard-style kabaddi is also used in the Kabaddi World Cup and Asian Games.

In Standard style kabaddi, the seven players on the mat are divided into right and left corners, right and left covers, and right-in and left-in positions that provide assistance to the cover defenders.

Raiders often occupy the central position, which is not part of the defensive unit. However, there is no set amount of raiders and defenders required on the mat, and teams are free to use whatever combination they like.

We at KabaddiAdda have you covered with our game’s rules and regulations. In this series of articles titled ‘How to Play Kabaddi?’ we explain the game and help you better comprehend it.

    • Kabaddi is a contact sport in which each team has seven participants. In every match, teams name 5 replacements.
    • The side that scores the most points wins the match. If both teams have the same amount of points, the game is a draw.
    • The match lasts 40 minutes, divided into two 20-minute halves.
    • One raid has a maximum time limit of 30 seconds in which the raider must contact as many defenders as possible. The defender’s goal is to prevent the raider from crossing the midfield line.
    • To determine which team will raid first, a coin flip is used. The side that defends during the first raid of the game will be the first to raid in the second half.

    Positions of the players

Corners- The team’s corners are positioned on the mat’s extreme right and left sides. The defender is responsible for initiating tackles. When the left raider is active, the right corner is primed to launch an attack, and vice versa.

Covers- The defenders who are positioned inside the corners are known as the covers. They are positioned in between INS and corners. In general, teams place their all-rounders in this position.

Ins- the INS are located between the ‘center’ and the coverings. One of the primary roles of the ‘in’ is to guard the ‘center,’ who is generally the team’s star raider. The ‘in’s defensive job is to assist the covers in stopping the raider.
