If you enjoy cricket and everything this sport offers, you may have even considered forming your own amateur team but might have been put off doing so because you don’t have a clue where to start. If so, don’t panic. We’ve got you covered.

Here is a beginner’s guide to setting up your amateur cricket team, including key things like rounding up a team of like-minded players, finding somewhere to play, typical costs, and more. Setting up your own cricket team isn’t as difficult as it sounds, provided you have the determination and passion to succeed.

There’s no guarantee that your team will win trophies, but you never know. At least you can have fun trying and put it down to life experience even if it doesn’t work out. Without further ado, here’s how you can form your very own cricket team in 2025.

How do I start my own cricket team?

If you are seriously considering kick-starting your own amateur cricket team, there’s a lot to consider, so only embark on an adventure like this if you believe you have what it takes to see it through. You don’t want to give up halfway through and let other people down.

If you think you have what it takes and need a little bit of guidance to get you started, you’ve come to the right place. Here are a few beginner’s tips for setting up a cricket team from scratch.

It will take a lot of hard work and effort on your part, but don’t be afraid to ask for help from the right people in your local area. With that said, here are some of the most important things you need to consider, to begin with, are the following:

    • Players – you will need to think of ways to gather a group of people who will be interested in playing regular cricket for your newly formed team. You will need a core team of 11 players, plus at least three to five additional players to cover for the others when they miss games through illness, injury, or any other reason
    • Where to play – your new cricket team will need somewhere to call home, which means you must find a suitable local playing field that will allow your team to play its home matches
    • Equipment – after forming your new team and finding somewhere to play, you will then need to start thinking about investing in the necessary cricket equipment. Examples include cricket balls and bats, gloves, helmets, a box, stumps, a team kit, and so on
    • Captaincy – approach your team and discuss early on who is the best person to represent your team as its captain or coach
    • Promotion – you may also want to start thinking about how you will promote our team and get local support/sponsorship deals, which can massively help fund the day-to-day running of your amateur cricket team. You also want to try and build up a fan base to support your team

Don’t forget that cricket season, including the world’s biggest cricket league, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), are fast approaching, so remember to get your team sorted before the action starts.

Also, if you want to place pre-match wagers on any of these upcoming matches, don’t forget that you can find IPL betting on 10CRIC with the best odds and markets. Avoid betting on cricket matches on unlicensed and unregulated websites, and avoid watching matches on illegal/pirate streaming platforms.

More information about forming your own team?

Now that you know the basics about setting up a new team, let’s take a closer look at what some of this means. You can make setting up your own cricket team from the ground up far less stressful than it needs to be, provided you plan things out carefully.

To start gathering your players, you can chat with friends, relatives, or colleagues to find out who might be interested in joining your team. You can chat in person with them and make phone calls, or you can reach much wider audiences far quicker by leveraging the internet, online forums, social media channels/platforms, and emails.

Perhaps consider making some adverts or blogs to post on local cricket forums and websites like Facebook and X or using video-sharing platforms and socially interactive messaging tools and services like WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, to name a few.

When looking for somewhere to play home matches, you may need to get in touch with your local authorities or council to find a suitable location. Try to make your home ground as central to your operations as possible because you don’t want to travel too far just to play your home fixtures.

Another way of finding a suitable playing field for your new team is to perhaps get in touch with whoever runs your local schools or community centres. Alternatively, you may be able to reach out to other local cricket teams to discuss sharing the venue if your options are limited.

This means you will be able to share the costs of using those facilities. However, some local clubs will be more receptive and open to this idea than others.

    What’s next?

If you manage to form a team and find somewhere to play, you will need to purchase the necessary equipment so you can start training as a team. The best thing to do is shop around online to try and find the best deals.

Now that you’re ready with your team to start playing other amateur cricket teams, you must register your team with the local cricket governing body. Remember to join a league suitable for your team’s current skill level, which may mean starting at the lowest possible tier.

However, if your team gets good, you will quickly climb your way up through the ranks. When registering your newly formed cricket team, make sure that you and everyone involved fully understand the rules and regulations, and should you need any more help, you can contact the league for more information. They should be more than happy to guide you in the right direction.

    Final thoughts

Setting up a new cricket team from scratch and then running/maintaining that team requires patience and hard work. Still, the payoff can be huge, especially if you start winning matches and enjoy your time together as a team playing your favourite sport.
