The brand-new SA20 league in South Africa, which will begin on January 10, promises to revolutionize cricket in the country and attract more fans. The top-tier league features six teams: MI Cape Town, Durban’s Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
The league’s inaugural match between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals, which takes place on January 10, and the championship match, which takes place on February 11, are the 33 games that will be played. The franchises will engage in double round-robin competitions during the league stage.
The semi-finals will be decided by the top four teams in the points table. It is interesting to note that each of the six franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is owned by different organizations. Also, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has a ten-year deal with Viacom18, so the Indian market is just as important to the league’s success.
Following the failure of the Mzansi Super League, South Africa’s second attempt at a franchise tournament is the SA20. Thanks to CSA’s investments, the league will undoubtedly offer youngsters and local cricketers opportunities to gain exposure and move closer to a spot on the national team.
