    Jonny Bairstow, England

This year, England’s elegant batsman is having a great season with the bat in the ODI format. At an average of 78.80, Bairstow amassed 394 runs in three ICC World Test Championship matches against New Zealand. For the series, he hit two centuries, one half-century, and a total of 305 runs.

England’s second-fastest Test century came in the second match at Trent Bridge, when he took just 77 balls to reach 100. As a result of his brilliant batting performance, his team now holds a 2-0 series lead. Because of his important role, he was awarded the Player of the Game honor.

Bairstow was unstoppable. He followed that up with a century off 144 balls at Headingley, England’s second-fastest in Tests. In the first innings, he scored 162 (157 balls), and in the second, he remained undefeated on 71. (44 balls).

    Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand

Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand’s middle-order hitter, not only scored runs but also set and shattered records. He scored 538 runs at an incredible average of 107.60 in the three Tests against England, including three centuries and two fifties. As a result, he topped the series’ run-getters tally and joined an elite group of five other Black Caps players:

    13 and 108 at Lord’s

190 and 62* at Trent Bridge

    109 and 56 at Headingley

To add to his achievements, he also beat an England record of 462 runs, set by Martin Donnelly back in 1949, during the Black Caps’ Test series against England.

    England’s Joe Root

Red-ball cricket has never seen the likes of the former England skipper. Against New Zealand, he became only the second England batter (after Alastair Cook) to surpass the 10,000-run mark in a single series, and he now ranks 14th all-time on the list.

Both Root and Cook were exactly 31 years and 157 days old when they reached the 10k milestone — making Root the joint-youngest to do it.

With 396 runs at an average of 99, including two centuries and a fifty, he was England’s leading run-scorer at the end of the series. During the first Test at Lord’s, he scored an unbeaten 115* and then a stunning 176 in the second at Trent Bridge. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was named Player of the Series.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, Root overtook Marnus Labuschagne, who had previously held the top spot, following his heroics at Lord’s and a good century at Trent Bridge.
