In shocking scenes 1400 fans storm the pitch to attack player. A TOP flight clash was abandoned after more than 1,400 fans stormed the pitch to attack players and coaching staff. Deportivo Cali traveled to the Estadio Doce de Octubre on a Wednesday to take on Cortulua but they were gifted an opening goal by Wilder Guisao when they attacked only twenty minutes into the game. Feiver Mercado then sealed all three points for them with a penalty in the next 20 minutes of play.
However, the match was halted in the 81st minute because around 1,400 people – mostly Deportivo Cali supporters – exited the stands and stormed onto the field. They began verbally and physically mistreating players and staff.
Teofilo Gutierrez struggled to get away as a group of furious supporters beat and kicked him. The referee and the majority of the players fled the scene.
A section of Deportivo Cali’s stadium was attacked during the recent Colombian league game with Boca Juniors and Manager Mayer Candelo was injured. Since, the club has released a statement requesting the local authorities to prevent a similar incident from happening again in future.
The Cali Sports Association, Executive Committee, and Luis Mena, VP of Manpower, released a message denouncing aggression and violence during the match against Cortulua. They clearly condemn any act of physical violence against their players’ and coaching staffs. They respectfully ask the government and sports authorities to intervene to avoid a tragedy in the future that mourns their sport.
