India vs West Indies, 2nd ODI highlights: Axar Patel scored an unbeaten 64 off 35 balls that helped India claim a thrilling two-wicket win and rejoice in attaining an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series. He helped India chase down a 312-run target against West Indies in the second ODI match of the three-match series at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad on the 24th of July, 2022.
In the recent past, Shai Hope’s century (115 runs off 135 deliveries) helped West Indies set a 312-run target for India.
Notably, India had overthrown West Indies by three runs in the first ODI at the same venue on Friday the 22nd of July, 2022.
Sanju Samson went on to make 54 runs off 51 deliveries, adding a 99-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who knocked 63 runs. Deepak Hooda further contributed with a 33-run cameo towards the end. With six runs needed off the last three balls, Axar clobbered Kyle Mayers straight to earn a six as India registered a sensational series-clinching win. He went on to knock five sixes and three fours.
The Indian team’s stand-in captain was Shikhar Dhawan. Shikhar Dhawan commented that it was a team performance. Added that the players always believed and everybody played well, even the 11 runs from Avesh Khan at the end was very helpful. The Indian team felt very restricted by the West Indies as they got off to a very good start.
Axar Patel was honored with the Player of the Match title. Earlier in the day, after electing to bat, the Windies managed to put up a score that was above par slightly, courtesy of a ton from Hope and a fine performance from their skipper Pooran.
The West Indies team was brilliant till the 40th over but it was the last 10 overs where everything fell apart. Before that, the performance displays of Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, and Jayden Seales were excellent but in the last 10, it just did not go according to plan. For Akeal Hosein it was a day to forget, Alzarri Joseph was not that great towards the end. Romario Shepherd too proved to be inefficient. Kyle Mayers also failed to defend 7 runs.
