Meg Lanning, the Australian captain, has chosen to continue her break from cricket in the WBBL8! On Tuesday, the Melbourne Stars said that their superstar player, Meg Lanning, will maintain a break from cricket and won’t play in the eighth season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

“Melbourne Stars Captain Meg Lanning will continue her indefinite break from cricket and will not play for the Melbourne Stars in WBBL08,” said a statement from the club.

    The club’s support

The club agrees with her choice and asks that her privacy be respected in the future. Lanning said earlier in August that she would stop playing cricket for a prolonged time because of personal reasons. Lanning had just helped her team win gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The Aussies beat India by nine runs in the final to win the gold medal.

After a busy two and a half years, during which Australia won the T20I and ODI World Cups and the Ashes series at home, she decided to take a break from the game. The 30-year-old player hasn’t said when she’d be back, but Cricket Australia has given her their support.

“We are proud of Meg for acknowledging that she needs a break and will continue to support her during this time,” said Shawn Flegler, CA’s Head of Performance, Women’s Cricket.

“She has been an incredible contributor to Australian cricket over the last decade, achieving remarkable feats both individually and as part of the team, and has been a brilliant role model for young kids. The welfare of our players is always our number one priority, and we will continue to work with Meg to ensure she gets the support and space she needs,” the Head of Performance concluded.

    Lanning’s statement and her game

In a written statement, Lanning had said: “After a busy couple of years, I have made the decision to take a step back to enable me to spend time focusing on myself. I am grateful for the support of CA and my teammates and ask that my privacy is respected during this time.”

Lanning played her first international cricket match when she was 18. Since then, she has become one of the best batters on her team and in women’s ODI as a whole. She hit a hundred in her second ODI, making her the youngest Australian to do so in an international game. This was one of many more that came after.

Since 2014, when she became captain, she has led Australia 171 times, which is third most after Ricky Ponting and Allan Border. Lanning has played in 54 games for the Melbourne Stars. She has scored 1,805 runs in these games, with an average of 41.97. Her best score for her team is 97*. Aussie star has made 18 half-centuries for Melbourne Stars.

The Women’s Big Bash League will start on October 13 and go on for a month.
