Michael Vaughan commented on Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal on Day 1 of the fourth Ashes Test saying “He’s forgetting to just play”

Former England captain Micheal Vaughan criticised Marnus Labuschagne’s, an Australian great hitter, for being overly eager to get a huge score rather than evaluating each ball on its own merits.

On Day 1 of the fourth Test at Manchester. Labuschangne reached his first half-century of the Ashes but was promptly sent out by a harmless ball from Moeen Ali. Before meekly losing his wicket, the right-handed batsman got off to a good start and seemed promising.

At the conclusion of play on Day 1, Michael Vaughan told Cricbuzz that he believed his recent dismissals were the result of greater concentration lapses made in the pursuit of a high score.

“Marnus is trying too hard, in my opinion, Vaughan added. He’s forgetting to just play because he’s working so hard to achieve this enormous big score. He appeared to have played effectively for his 50 before abruptly losing focus. He played the sweep shot and was successful last week at Headingley against Moeen Ali. Just that moment of distraction.”

The former Ashes-winning captain was especially scathing of Marnus Labuschagne’s termination because to a Moeen Ali delivery that went for naught.

“The removal of Moeen today should not have happened, continued Vaughan. For someone like Marnus to have that tiny moment when he simply loses focus and plays it a little bit too square on the on side, especially given how brilliant a player he is. Quite a slight bend, nothing too extreme that Marnus shouldn’t be taking.”

Although Labuschagne has impressive overall Test statistics with an average of 53.76, he has had trouble with the bat in 2023. In his 10 games played thus far this season, the right-hander has averaged just 36.56 and hasn’t reached a century.

Regarding Marnus Labuschagne’s, Michael Vaughan stated “Thought he was clear today”

Despite being clumsily dismissed, Michael Vaughan said Marnus Labuschagne seemed close to his best on Day 1 of the fourth Test. The one-drop batsman scored his 16th Test half-century and shared the day’s best score for Australia with Mitchell Marsh at Manchester.

However, Labuschagne played all around a Moeen Ali delivery to be removed for 51 just when it seemed like a significant blow could finally be on the horizon.

“Today, he left the ball better. He was jabbing at several balls around the fifth stump in the previous innings, Vaughan continued. I believed he was really clear today, leaving properly, letting the ball arrive, and working it on the on side. But leaving at that point when he was in and seeming strong was a tremendous mistake, especially after that delivery.”

The 29-year-old’s pitiful average of 27.85 runs per inning during the Ashes has resulted in just 195 runs.

Despite Labuschagne’s bat not producing many huge runs. Australia leads the series 2-1 and has a great chance to win their first series in England since 2001
