On Australia’s miraculous comeback from being on the verge of defeat in the fourth Test, Vaughan said, “It ranks as one of the luckiest escapes I can remember” Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan a former England captain, emphasized Australia’s reliance on rain during the final two days of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford Manchester.

After the final day was rained off. The Australians kept the trophy, preventing England from taking the remaining five wickets and tying the five-match series at 2-2.

At Stumps on Day 4 Australia was down by 61 runs and needed to play out the entire fifth day to win the Ashes. On a day hampered by rain. However, neither team was able to enter the field. Leading to an anticlimactic conclusion to the match that Australia would not be upset about.

In his Telegraph essay, Vaughan asserted that throughout the entire Test. The Australian team had been worried and terrified of the England team:

Australia played for rain the entire week in Manchester because they were so terrified of this England team. Australia was alarmed: I don’t recall ever saying that. They’ll be aware that only rain could have saved them. One of the lucky escapes I can recall, in my opinion.

Marnus Labuschagne’s return to form stands out as the one bright spot for Australia in a match in which they were second best. The right-handed hitter finally made the runs in the series by scoring fifty and one hundred in the Test.

Vaughan continued, writing that the current Australian team is unable to post dominating totals:

The only true plus was Marnus Labuschagne’s better play at Old Trafford. At Old Trafford, Australian sides from the past would have scored 400 runs in the opening innings. The fact that the Australian team is scoring in the 30s and 40s suggests that their batting unit lacks confidence in their ability to produce huge runs.

Australia was given the bat by Ben Stokes and scored 317 runs in the first inning. Several hitters got off to strong starts but passed away before they could really contribute to the big picture.

On the possibility that The Oval Test marked the end of an era, Michael Vaughan said “That would be the perfect way to say goodbye”

Even though the urn’s destiny has already been determined there is a lot on the line in the season finale at The Oval.

Australia still has to win the fifth Test. At the very least in order to win the first red-ball series in England since 2001.

In addition, Vaughan noted that other veterans including Stuart Broad, David Warner, Steve Smith, and James Anderson, may depend on the outcome of the upcoming match.

The Oval remains an exciting Test. Several outstanding players from each team could retire at the conclusion of the Oval Test. David Warner and Steve Smith may be considering retiring now, while Anderson and Stuart Broad are undoubtedly at the conclusion rather than the beginning of their careers, the author said.

Australia, who are about to win here for the first time in 22 years. Is on the verge of something extraordinary. That would be the ideal way to bid them farewell, Vaughan continued.

On Thursday, July 27, the fifth Ashes Test is slated to start at The Oval in London.
