After graduating from high school, he played football at George Washington High School. As a junior, he led his team in points as well as yards-per-game and as a senior, he averaged over 250 yards-per-game and scored just under 30 touchdowns.

Other than football, Switzer played basketball and was their starting point guard. He helped lead George Washington to the 2011 AAA state basketball title.

The lead man on a 4×100 and a 4×200 team, Mike Switzer accumulated many accolades in the sport of track and field. In addition to being ranked among the nation’s top high school football players, he also was an incredible athlete. Named to the Collegiate All-American Team, Mike played cornerback for the University of North Carolina. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1973 after he left school.

In 2013, Switzer led all NCAA major college players in punt return yards. He caught 61 passes for 757 yards and four touchdowns while playing as a sophomore in 2014. In 2015, he helped lead his team to victory at NC State with catching a 59-yard touchdown pass.

At the end of his junior year, Swigate had 55 receptions for 697 yards and six touchdowns. There was a controversy about one punt return where he was ruled to have called an invalid signal ahead of time, which led to the ball being moved back.

Utilizing his vast knowledge and experience with statistical data, he finished the season with 96 catches for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns. He became NC’s all-time leading receiver, beating out Walter Tyson by one catch.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Switzer 133rd overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. This was the fourth draft pick from North Carolina.

On September 10, 2017, Switzer made his NFL debut and fielded two kick returns for 42 net yards and one punt return for no yards. His first career carry resulted in a three-yard rush against the Arizona Cardinals on September 25.

On October 1, against the Los Angeles Rams, Switzer fumbled away a punt. The Rams recovered the ball at the Cowboys’ 18-yard line, leading to a touchdown and making it harder for the Cowboys to win.

He performed 8.8 yards/punt return. This places him as ninth-best of 20 returners with at least 25 attempts. He also ran 25 yards/kickoff attempt, placing him third-highest among 10 kick returners with at least 24 attempts.

In return for the Cowboys’ acquisition of Tavon Austin, the Oakland Raiders traded Switzer to them for defensive tackle Jihad Ward. Rick Biscaccia was his coach with the Cowboys, who is now returning as a coach for the Raiders.

In a trade with Philadelphia, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Switzer in exchange for a draft pick. Curiously enough, he recorded his first touchdown reception of the season during Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Lately, Switzer was not playing much due to a back injury. However, he was recently activated, and appeared in 9 games this season. He registered 8 receptions for 27 yards, 8 punt returns for 29 yards, and 9 kickoff returns for 166 yards.

He was passed on the depth chart by Ray-Ray McCloud during training camp in 2020, and he was waived on September 5.

On December 8, 2020, the Cleveland Browns signed Switzer to the practice squad/injured list. On December 24, 2020, Switzer was placed on the practice squad/COVID-19 list. However, on January 23, 2021, Switzer signed a reserve/futures contract with the Browns.
