The Indian Premier League announced on Friday that beginning with the upcoming season (IPL 2023), each team will be permitted to use a substitute who “will be able to take a more active part in the match.”Twitter was used to make the announcement.
This season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tried out the idea of tactical substitutes in the domestic T20 competition known as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The IPL captioned its tweet, “Time for a New Season, Time for a New Rule How big an “impact” will the substitute player have this edition of the #TATAIPL.”

At the time of the toss in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, teams were asked to name four substitutes, one of whom could serve as an “Impact Player.”Before the 14th over of either inning, the Impact Player was allowed to bat and bowl his full quota of overs and could replace any players from the starting XI.
The system had a huge tactical reach, and substitutes could take on any role they wanted. As long as the team used only 11 batters, he could bat in place of a batter who had already been struck out. Or, he could bowl four overs instead of replacing a bowler who had already bowled a few overs.
Compared to previous substitution systems, the Impact Player rule offers more tactical flexibility.
In the Supersub system that was used in ODIs in 2005 and 2006, the substitute played the same role as the player he replaced. He could not bat if the original player had already been run out, and he could only bowl the overs that were left over from the replaced player’s quota.
Teams in the Australian Big Bash League (BBL) can change a player from their starting XI after ten overs in a full Twenty20 game.
In addition, the player who was replaced cannot have bowled more than one over out of his quota or already batted.
