Vengsarkar wanted Shami, Umran & Shubman for World Cup

Vengsarkar wanted Shami, Umran & Shubman for World Cup

Vengsarkar wanted Shami, Umran & Shubman for World Cup: The former captain and top selector of India, Dilip Vengsarkar, has been impressed by Umran Malik’s express pace and Shubman Gill’s batting form. He feels both players should have been included in India’s T20 World Cup roster.

He is also perplexed that veteran seamer Mohammed Shami was overlooked by the selection committee for the ICC tournament in Australia.

    T20

For the Twenty20 World Cup, I would have started with Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik, and Shubman Gill. It would have given them a lot of playing time in T20Is if they had a good IPL season, Vengsarkar said to The Indian Express.

Three Indian Premier League players—Shami, Malik, and Gill—excelled this year. Shami and Gill were instrumental in the first-ever IPL title for the Gujarat Titans, and Malik popularised bowling speeds of 150 kph and above.

Although he will play in the home T20I series against Australia and South Africa, Shami has not been selected in the shortest format since the T20 World Cup last year. In IPL 2022, his captain Hardik Pandya turned to him when the team needed early wickets. Shami was the Titans’ best bowler, as he took 20 wickets in 16 games and 11 wickets in the Powerplay at an economy rate of 6.62.

MSK Prasad, another previous chairman of selectors, agreed with Vengsarkar that Shami’s added speed would have been useful in Australia and backed up Vengsarkar’s decision to pick him.

    Statements

“I don’t feel like we’re getting the fast tempo of Shami. Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are not express players. “Only Jasprit Bumrah, the former India wicketkeeper, has that extra speed,” he said.

Gill was the fifth-highest scorer in the IPL 2022 with 483 runs despite playing in only 16 games. Even though he hasn’t played in a Twenty20 International yet, he was recently named Player of the Series in one-day internationals (ODIs) against both the West Indies and Zimbabwe.

Malik, then 22 years old, finished the 2022 IPL season with 22 wickets in 14 games. Although his economy rate (9.03) was above average, no other pacer grabbed more wickets in the middle overs (7-16) (19).

Though he acknowledges that T20 batting orders are variable, Vengsarkar still has faith in Suryakumar Yadav to take on the role of finisher.

    Declarations

I’m not qualified to make any judgments on who bats where. It is up to the executive committee (consisting of the coach, captain, and vice-captain) to decide. Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently batting in the number four spot, can also play the role of No. 5 batter, in my opinion. “He has the potential to be an outstanding closer,” Vengsarkar added.

There is no need to have specific batsmen in specific positions in T20 compared to ODIs and Tests. Basically, with this setup, hitters can take their spots wherever they like on the field. You can’t afford to relax right now. It’s best to attack the bowlers right away.

Even if plans need to be adaptable, Prasad believed that captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli would be the first-choice top-three at the World Cup.

“Rohit, Rahul, and Virat will unquestionably be our first three batters. “Now that Virat is back to form, they may give him a shot at opening the batting, whereas KL has historically done well in the middle order,” he remarked.

However, Prasad acknowledged that the team’s loss of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who can swing the game with his bat, ball, or fielding, due to injury, was significant.

Clearly, this is a devastating setback for India. His presence on this Indian team is crucial. His finishing-role batting has become very important for India. He is a versatile middle-order bat who can play wherever the team needs him. Prasad, who led the panel that decided which players would represent India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, stated that his team’s loss of him due to injury was a major setback.

After the forthcoming T20 World Cup, he thinks other players who weren’t selected, like Sanju Samson, would have second chances.

When asked who Samson would replace in the T20 World Cup, he replied, “The question is, Samson, in lieu of who.” Bowling with Deepak Hooda gives you more variety. Shreyas Iyer has performed admirably in the home series against Sri Lanka and the series in the West Indies.

    Remarks

If they were serious about picking him, management should have included Sanju in their plans for the Asia Cup or the next home series against South Africa and Australia. If he doesn’t be chosen, it’s clear he doesn’t play a significant role. After the T20 World Cup, “players like Sanju, Ravi Bishnoi, Ishan Kishan, and others will get more opportunities and will be regulars, at least in T20Is,” Prasad stated.

He found very little unexpected about the group assembled.

The former stumper remarked that they have a really excellent team, and how they do in the tournament is up to them.

This kind of team would have been predicted based on trends over the past year. From the way they’ve been shuffled around, it’s possible to guess who the last 15 will be. Everything seems to have been taken care of.
