Watch: After 12 years and 6 days, Jaydev Unadkat takes his first Test wicket when an unplayable ball bowls over Bangladesh’s opener

After 12 years, six days, and 179 deliveries, Jaydev Unadkat took his first Test wicket in the Mirpur, India vs. Bangladesh, 2nd Test match. With a scorching delivery, Unadkat bowled Bangladesh opener, Zakir Hasan, out of the game. It took Jaydev Unadkat 12 years, 6 days, and 179 deliveries to get his first wicket in a Test. In his 26-over Test debut against South Africa in Centurion in December 2010, he had not taken a wicket.

After that, he will play in his second Test against Bangladesh on December 22, 2022, in Mirpur. After England’s Gareth Batty, it is the second-longest wait in the world between two Test matches by an Indian, both in terms of years and Test matches missed. Between the months of December 2010 and December 2022, Unadkat failed 118 tests.

Just Deranged has missed more Tests – 145 – between 2005-16. Dinesh Karthik returned to the Indian team in 2018 after missing 87 Tests. However, Unadkat would assert that the wait was well worth it. He was replaced in the India XI for the second Test by Kuldeep Yadav, who returned with his career-best figures of 8 for 113, his highest Test score of 40, and Player of the Match honors in India’s 188-run victory. However, Unadkat had his own tale to share.

Second Test Live Score: India vs. Bangladesh

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan, Bangladesh’s opening batters who batted left-handed, were trounced by the tireless left-arm pacer. After the hosts chose to bat first, Unadkat was brought into the attack in the ninth over of the Bangladesh innings. In his fIrst Test in 12 years, he gave up only one run.
He defeated Zakir Hasan’s outside edge in his subsequent over.

He beat Shanto’s outside edge twice to start the third over. Every ball that Unadkat bowled had an event on it. In his fourth over, Unadkat got one to jag back sharply from a length after peppering the outside edge, rapping Shanto on the front pad. An enormous appeal was unsuccessful. KL Rahul, India’s stand-in captain, decided against requesting a replay after having a brief conversation with Rishabh Pant.

The decision was correct because the movement would have moved the ball away from the left stump, as evidenced by replays. However, Unadkat was getting nearer. After a few balls, he used his height and high release point to get an awkward bounce out of the good-length area, tying up Hasan. He gloved his attempted cut shot into the air after losing control.

Standing in the slip cordon, Rahul took a straightforward catch. Unadkat closed his eyes and let them sink in while raising both arms in the air. It finally arrived after a long wait. He must have seen all those lonesome days of hard work in domestic cricket in that brief moment. They generally appeared to be worth the effort.
