We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is played’ – Ben Stokes. After England’s historic triumph over India, in which they achieved their highest-ever successful run chase, Ben Stokes said he believes the team’s new approach to batting fourth in Tests will inspire dread in its opponents.
Knowing that England had previously chased down scores of 299, 296 and 277 in the fourth innings of three Tests against New Zealand last month, England’s captain won the toss but opted to bowl first against India.
Joe Root (142 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (114 not out) batted together for an unbroken 269 runs to help England easily chase down India’s revised target of 378 in the rescheduled Test at Edgbaston.
The third inning has risen or extended into the fourth because opposing teams must fully concentrate on how we’re going to play. The comment was made by Stokes.
It’s an incredible situation for a team to be in when they’re already being feared before they’ve even finished their innings.
Teams have a hard time getting past the third inning, even when they are ahead.

Since Stokes took over as captain from Root, the English team has won all four Tests they have played after chasing down large totals in the fourth innings.
England had won only one of their last 17 Tests under Root’s leadership, and they were last in the ICC World Test Championship.
England’s recent four-game winning streak and the team’s revamped roster have renewed interest in the national team throughout the local summer.
We hope to continue implementing the many strategies we developed over the course of the past four or five weeks.
“How are we going to take wickets? is more important than bowling top of off or drying up. Take 10 wickets; that’s what your bowling assault needs to do.”
There will be a shift to multiple white-ball series for England at home, with three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals scheduled against both India and South Africa.
The first of three Tests against South Africa begins on August 17 at Lord’s, and they’ll be hoping to carry over their impressive white-ball record and maybe even some fourth-innings heroics into that match.
“The good backing (support) that we’ve had over the last 5 weeks” Stokes added, “and we know that we want to give fresh life to Test cricket in the way that we go about it.”
Amazingly, we feel like we’ve attracted a whole new group of fans to the game in just a short amount of time.
“For the run time being, more vital (important) than winning or losing is enlightening or instructive and inspiring or uplifting the next generation of English players and fans. We hope to make an indelible impression on the world of Test cricket.”
