The History of Headingley Cricket Ground

A group of benefactors, led by Lord Hawke, built a sports field in Headingley. Lord Hawke was also influential in starting the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. At first, the ground aimed to be used for six sports: cricket, rugby, football, tennis, bowls, and cycling. In September 1890, the first first-class cricket game on record took place at Headingley.

In 1903, Headingley became the new home of Yorkshire. In 1932, a fire destroyed the main stand, which was then used for both cricket and rugby. Soon later, it was replaced by a building that stood until it was torn down in 2018. The ground was bought from Leeds Cricket by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 2005. It is a company for football and sports. Lord Hawke put them in place when the ground was first set up. The Carnegie Pavilion was the first part of the ground that Yorkshire County Cricket Club changed when it took over ownership.

Famous sports occurrences that happened at the Headingley Cricket Ground

The following are the most crucial moments at this famous ground.

    • In 1932, when Yorkshire played Nottinghamshire, spinner Hedley Verity took ten wickets and gave up ten runs. This is still the best bowling analysis in the history of first-class cricket. In 1931, Verity won all ten wickets against Warwickshire at Headingley.
    • Australia beat England in the Fourth Test of the 1948 Ashes series by scoring 404 for three on the last day. Arthur Morris got 182, and Bradman didn’t get out until he got 173.
    • Geoff Boycott got his 100th first-class hundred in the 1977 Ashes test. After four days, England won the same game to win the series and get the Ashes back.
    • When India played England at Headingley from August 22 to August 26, 2002, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid hit hundreds.
    • On August 17, 2017, Yorkshire Vikings scored 260–4, the highest T20 score in English domestic cricket. Adam Lyth scored 161, the highest score by an individual in English T20 domestic cricket.
    • It was the site of four 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup games.
