This Sunday at the Stade Raymond Kopa, Angers and Auxerre will face off in a battle between the two teams at the bottom of Ligue 1.
With just nine points, Angers are at the top of the Ligue 1 table, five points behind 19th-place Auxerre going into this match. It would be an extreme understatement to describe their most recent appearance as appalling.
Auxerre hasn’t done much better in recent months; they haven’t won since October 30 and only ended a seven-game losing streak against Reims last weekend with a 0-0 draw. However, they only have a slim chance of survival because they are only five points away from safety.
While Souleyman Doumbia is suspended, Angers may be without injured Farid El Melali, Abdoulaye Bamba, Yahia Fofana, Ali Kalla, and Ulrick Eneme-Ella this weekend. Even though they are still firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, Angers ended a 13-match unbeaten streak with a 0-0 draw at Lorient last time out.
This week, Auxerre appears to have a much better injury picture than their hosts. Kays Ruiz-Atil, a midfielder, is ill and could be out for a few weeks, but the rest of the Auxerre team should be healthy and available. In their most recent Ligue 1 match, Auxerre played Reims to a 0-0 draw.
Prior to Sunday’s matchup, Angers and Auxerre were ranked bottom and second bottom of Ligue 1, respectively. An exciting battle may be in the works as both teams attempt to win the relegation battle. Both ends scored in nine of Angers’ last ten divisional home games. BTTS also came in when they drew 2-2 with Auxerre earlier this season and when they drew 2-2 in a friendly match in December. Given that neither defense can guarantee a clean sheet, our first prediction suggests betting on both teams scoring.
Given that both teams have been in poor form this season, unable to score goals or keep them out, this should be a close game.
Angers may have a slight advantage here due to their home advantage, but they haven’t won since mid-September, so it’s hard to see that changing.
It seems pointless to attempt to predict who will win because both teams will be desperate for a victory and will likely score. The most likely outcome is a draw.
Prediction: Angers 1-1 Auxerre
Since a Coupe de France match in 2012, Angers has not lost to Auxerre in a competitive match. The most recent encounter ended in a 2-2 draw, with Auxerre playing with ten men.
The last time Angers beat Nice was on September 18th. They haven’t won since, drawing 0-0 with Lorient last weekend to earn one point. That result ended a shocking streak of 13 consecutive defeats. Auxerre is also having a bad time; in their last 18 games, they have only won once. They have lost 13 times during that run.
It should come as no surprise that these two teams currently have the worst defenses in Ligue 1, with Auxerre having given up 46 goals and Angers having given up 47. With just 18 goals between them, both teams also score a few goals. This season, Pierrick Capelle of Angers has been cautioned seven times, more than any other player in Ligue 1.
