Aurelio De Laurentiis announced to never buy : Recently, the Napoli President stated he will not buy the African players until they agree to not play in the African cup of nations. Napoli is currently having the top players from the continent which include Victor Osimhen.
Last year Napoli had Senegal Defender Kalidou Coulibaly and Cameron midfielder Andre Zambo Anguissa so they can play for the respective countries to fulfill their International commitments. Coulibaly is now signed with Chelsea FC. Napoli also has star striker Victor, but he was not playing in the AFCON earlier this year.
AFCON- African Cup of Nations only takes place after every two years and commences for a month in January. The 2021 edition was played this year so it was postponed due to covid and the next edition is in 2023. So, there will back to back editions of AFCON
De Laurentiis reacted with a series of statements.
The 73-year-old De Laurentiis says he loves Napoli African players, but the amount of time they are away from playing AFCON, he had to pay them so much. During a streaming event, Laurentiis said” I already told the players not to talk to me about the Africans. I love them and will dig them, but only if they sign something confirming they will back out from playing AFCON or playing between the tournaments. The World cup qualifiers of South America, these players are always unavailable.”
