Axelsen, Viktor: How having a second daughter changed my outlook Viktor Axelsen Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen is having a second child and is in the midst of one of his best seasons. He tells Olympics.com that he is still driven primarily by his family.
This year, life changed once more. The Dane, who won his second world title and gave birth to his second child this summer, is already a badminton Olympic and world champion and a father.
The 28-year-old is preparing for the 2022 Denmark Open (18–23 October) with a fresh outlook now that he is back home with his wife and two daughters.
Axelsen admits that he now plays all of his tournaments with his daughters Vega and Aya in mind because he has two young children with him.
At the World Championships in Tokyo in August, he told Olympics.com’s Shintaro Kano, “When you don’t have kids, you feel like you play a little bit for yourself.”
However, he won the title in 2022, concluding a successful campaign that saw him win his first world title since 2017.
However, Axelsen does not take the time to reflect on previous tournaments, both successful and unsuccessful. Seasonally, I don’t really think about it, which I think is a pretty good strength of mine. It’s not like I think to myself in December, “Oh, what a year I’ve had!”
“Obviously, when I accomplish something great, I try to enjoy it and all of the wins. But regardless of whether I win or lose, I try to just learn every time and work hard every day. And then hopefully I’ll be able to play even better.”
The majority of Dane’s motivation comes from his young family, as Dane likes to focus on one tournament at a time.
How did he overcome his downfall following the Olympic Games and his disappointment at the World Championships? The Dane insists that he needs to put in a lot of effort and be determined to maintain his position as world number one.
Axelsen states, “I like the word grit a lot.” To succeed, one must be able to put in the time and effort required for each session and possess grit. Obviously, you also need talent, the right environment, the right circumstances, and everything else.
“I don’t take it for granted that I’m in the right place at the right time, and that everything is working out for me. I make an effort to do everything in my power to provide myself with opportunities to truly succeed in every competition and challenge I face.”
