The Premier League returns to action this weekend with a second set of games, with Southampton taking on Chelsea in a crucial match at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues fell to Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, Karim Adeyemi scoring a stunning solo goal in the 63rd minute after drawing three consecutive Premier League matches against Liverpool, Fulham, and West Ham United.
Even though Chelsea spent more than £600 million on new players in the previous two transfer windows, the club’s failure to sign a natural number nine has come back to haunt them. Once again, Chelsea lacked a cutting edge in the final third. In fact, the West Londoners have scored just five goals in their last 14 games across all competitions, and they have only scored 23 goals in 22 games this season in the Premier League.
Potter and company enter Saturday’s Premier League match in 10th place, their lowest position at this point in a top-flight season in seven years. They are also 10 points behind fourth-place Newcastle United.
Currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League standings, Southampton’s performance this season has been dismal. The away team lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 last week, and they will need to work hard in this game to get back on track.
On the other hand, Chelsea is currently in 10th place in the league table and has struggled to live up to expectations over the past year. The Blues will need to step up their game this weekend after losing to Borussia Dortmund by a score of 1-0.

This season, Chelsea has assembled a formidable team, but they haven’t yet found their stride in the Premier League. Over the course of the past month, players like Joao Felix and Enzo Fernandez, who have shown glimpses of their potential, will be eager to demonstrate their worth in the league this weekend.
This season, Southampton has struggled to establish themselves and is currently in turmoil. On paper, Chelsea is the better team and leads going into this game.
Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Southampton
Southampton has won 32 of Chelsea’s 112 matches, but Chelsea has won 49 of those matches. Chelsea has a good record against Southampton.
In the reverse match against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium last year, Chelsea lost 2-1. Since December 1993, Chelsea has not lost consecutive league games to the Saints.
For the first time since Alan Shearer’s debut for Southampton at Stamford Bridge in 1987-88, Southampton is aiming to win both league games against Chelsea.
Since the 2006-2007 season, Chelsea’s streak of three consecutive draws in the Premier League is the longest it has ever been. In their last 28 Premier League games, Southampton has only kept one clean sheet, which came in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth in October 2021.
