In the EFL Championship, Coventry takes on Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday, February 25, with the goal of winning the league for the third time in a row. Following victories over Rotherham (2-0) and Milwall (1-0), the Bluebirds are currently unbeaten.
With 45 points from 32 games, they moved up to 11th place in the standings as a result. Since November 2022, when they went on a four-game winning streak, Mark Robins’ team hasn’t won three straight games. Sunderland, on the other hand, is three places ahead of Coventry in the standings and has four more points than them.
The visitors, on the other hand, are merely going through the motions right now, having won just twice out of their last five games. The Black Cats recently lost 2-1 to Rotherham after drawing with Bristol City 1-1. That has hurt their chances of getting promoted, as Tony Mowbray’s team dropped out of the top six and is now in eighth place.
Coventry, fresh off of back-to-back victories, will be eager to make it three in a row, but Sunderland, vying for promotion, may give them serious competition. This matchup has the potential to end in a 1-1 draw for the fourth time in the last six games.
Prediction: Coventry 1-1 Sunderland
In the 43 previous meetings between the two teams, Coventry defeated Sunderland 15 times and lost 12 times. In February 2007, Sunderland defeated Coventry 2-0 at home in the Championship. Their last three meetings have ended in a tie.
Since a 1-0 victory in April 1985, Sunderland has not won in their last nine league visits to Coventry. Coventry has won more league games in their last two games than they had in their previous 11 games combined. Sunderland lost to Rotherham United 2-1 last time out.
They have only lost consecutive league games this season, losing to Burnley and Blackburn in October. This season, Viktor Gyokeres has contributed to 18 league goals (14 goals, 4 assists), more than any other Coventry player. In addition, he has contributed to five goals in his last six games.
Fabio Tavares and Callum O’Hare of Coventry are recovering from Achilles and ACL injuries and will miss the rest of the season. Ben Sheaf, a midfielder, has a calf injury and will be out for a few more weeks.
Robins is hopeful that Fankaty Dabo will be able to recover from his hamstring injury soon, but Jonathan Panzo is more uncertain about his knee injury, which he got from hitting a goalpost during a training session.
With his late goal against Rotherham, Gyokeres now has five goals and three assists in six Championship games for the Sweden striker. Kasey Palmer should join Gyokeres at the top once more. Meanwhile, Sunderland’s Ross Stewart (Achilles) and Corry Evans (ACL) are both out for the long haul, despite the latter’s recent contract extension.
In addition, Lynden Gooch and Elliot Embleton are filling positions in the visitors’ hospital, and one possible midweek substitution could see Patrick Roberts replace Edouard Michut or Alex Pritchard, both of whom are on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
