Despite being prohibited from the nation in January because to his immunisation status, Novak Djokovic informed Serbian state broadcaster RTS on Monday that he hopes to be permitted to compete in the Australian Open the following year. In 2021, Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon championships. However, he was unable to retain his Melbourne Park crown because he refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. He lost the French Open championship this year after losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals, but he successfully defended his Wimbledon championship on Sunday.

The 21-time major winner is currently prohibited from entering the United States unless he has had a COVID vaccination, and his expulsion from Australia came with a three-year re-entry restriction.

After Djokovic was deported from Australia in January, then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison suggested that, “under the appropriate circumstances,” his prohibition on re-entering the country may be lifted. After skipping the Australian Open and losing to Nadal at Roland Garros, Djokovic’s season did not go as planned, leaving him one major short of the extremely uncommon calendar-year Grand Slam.

The COVID-19 epidemic caused the 2020 tournament to be cancelled, but the 35-year-old has won the last four Wimbledon championships in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. The record-holder Nadal, who has won 22 majors, is currently one Grand Slam victory ahead of him.

On Monday, tens of thousands of people screamed “Nole! Nole!. Authorities planned a music and fireworks display. Djokovic spoke to the crowd while standing on the balcony of City Hall and threw 20 tennis balls with his signature into the crowd.
