Gautam Gambhir criticizes workload management as the “worst blunder” that Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups.

Before the One-Day International World Cup, India has to create a core squad and make sure everyone plays in every game, according to Gautam Gambhir. The former left-handed batsman said that taking vacations from one-day internationals is not an option this year. He referred to the practise of workload management as “the worst blunder in Indian cricket” in the last couple of years or so.

This year will mark ten years since India has last won an ICC title. Since MS Dhoni led Team India to victory in the Champions Trophy in 2013, the team has gone close to winning the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the 2019 World T20 final; but, they have been unable to cross the finish line and claim victory. However, they did not live up to expectations in either of the two T20 World Cups that they participated in. Although they won four out of five group matches to move to the semi-final as table toppers in the previous year’s edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia, they were unable to qualify for the knockout stages because of a humiliating loss to England by 10 wickets. This result was repeated in the 2021 T20 World Cup that was held in the United Arab Emirates. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is of the opinion that one of the primary reasons for India’s below-par outings in the most recent two World Cups is the frequent breaks taken by top players such as captain Rohit Sharma.

They were able to interact and play together. The fact that these players have not spent enough time playing cricket together is, in my opinion, the single largest error that the Indian cricket team has made in the two most recent World Cups. I’d want you to tell me how many times we’ve had the greatest player playing 11 on the park. We haven’t done that; it was only at the World Cup that we decided to play with our best 11 players, but, sadly, that team was never our best playing 11. “So regardless of whether they want to take a vacation from the T20 or from the IPL, these players have to play enough white ball cricket together,” Gambhir remarked on the Star Sports programme ‘Road to World Cup Glory.’

    Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir also shared his thoughts on how India’s One-Day International (ODI) World Cup team should be chosen in terms of strategy and template for the 50-over version of the game. First, you need to find the players who have that fearless attitude, and maybe in a format like 50 overs you need to have a blend of every sort of player. First, you need to identify the guys who have that fearless approach. There are athletes that have the ability to serve as the foundation of their innings. Alterations made to the job have also resulted in significant shifts in perception. During that time, we only had one brand new ball, but today we have two brand new balls, each of which has five fielders. Therefore, the position of a part-time worker is no longer relevant in today’s society. You don’t see nearly as many instances of the reverse swings as you formerly did, and similarly, you don’t see nearly as many instances of the pursuit for the finger spinners.

Gambhir predicted that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohler will each play a significant part in India’s overall performance in the ODI World Cup. In addition, it is possible that this will be the last big 50-overs competition in which the great cricket players play.

    Gautam Gambhir

When we speak about this new approach, which India constantly talks about, the template, and other things, I always get the feeling that you need to select players who can quickly adapt those positions or that template. This is something that I always believe is necessary. Because some individuals are just unable to conform to that model, there is no use in trying to coerce them into playing in a manner that is not in their nature. Rather than thinking that we have to play at a certain template, which would require us to choose all 15 players with the same mindset or a template that is comparable to the one we are trying to play at, I believe it is more important to focus on identifying players and finding the right combination of those players. In the next World Cup, I believe that players like as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and all of those other guys who can anchor their innings and who possibly can spin exceptionally effectively will play a significant role.
