The final match of Indian Super League Matchday 17 in 2022-23 sets the stage for a battle in which both sides want to win. It’s a battle between two teams that have been a part of the inaugural ISL roster but haven’t won the prestigious trophy yet.
This Super Sunday, the Tuskers will host the upcoming match between NorthEast United and Kerala Blasters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. Before it is too late for Ivan Vukonamovic and his boys to reach the Top 3, it is time for a wake-up call.
They have already been surpassed by their rivals Goa, and if they continue their winless streak, ATK Mohun Bagan and Odisha will quickly catch up. With 25 points, the Tuskers are currently in fourth place in the points table, just one point behind the Gaurs.
The Guwahati-based organization has used every weapon at its disposal, despite changing the coaching staff or overhauling the squad. However, NorthEast United’s situation has not improved, and they are still in the bottom half of the table, with only four points from 15 games.

Any visiting team has always been thought to have a difficult time defeating the Blasters in front of a large Manjappada crowd. Kerala Blasters has a better chance of winning this upcoming matchup when other factors like the head-to-head record, points table, and the outcome of the previous encounter are taken into consideration.
However, it will be very interesting to see if the Highlanders who have just arrived can alter their circumstances.
Despite not yet reaching the heights of the ISL, NorthEast United and Kerala Blasters share one thing in common: they both have devoted fans. Since the very first face-off, which was also the second match of the inaugural season, these two fighters’ rivalry has always been fierce.
The Kochi-based team has a 7-4 head-to-head record in 17 matches, and six of those matches have ended with neutral scores. The Tuskers upset the home crowd at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium with a 3-0 victory in the most recent face-off between them.
After Dimitrios Diamantakos’ goal in the 55th minute, the Kerala-based club dominated the hosts and took a small 1-0 lead for the majority of play. After that, Sahal Abdul Samad scored twice in the final six minutes of the game after coming off the bench in the 65th minute.
The Blasters, who have such a dominating record, were unable to match their performance the previous time they played the Highlanders on their home field. At halftime, the score was still 1-1, but neither of the goals came from field play and neither of them came from penalties.
The Tuskers’ star Nigerian striker Bartholomew Ogbeche broke the tie for the Tuskers, while NEU’s most prominent Ghanaian player Asamoah Gyan scored the equalizer in the 50th minute.
Joseba Beitia, a former Mohun Bagan player who won the I-League, recently joined the Guwahati-based team and has already begun training with the roster. The attacking midfielder from Spain is expected to make his Highlanders debut in place of Wilmar Jordan Gil, who is out with a knee injury.
Emil Benny, a Wayanad-born midfielder, is another player who might be in the Highlanders’ lineup because Pragyan Gogoi might leave. As the Blasters’ first-choice skipper Jessel Carneiro lost his place in the starting XI, the Uruguayan playmaker Adrian Luna was given the captain’s armband.
In the previous game, manager Ivan Vukonamovic made an unexpected decision to play two new fullbacks, which proved to be disastrous. Due to his injury, Croatian central defender Marko Leskovic will miss another game, but Rahul KP may return to the matchday squad.
