The Premier League returns this weekend with a second round of games, with Chelsea facing Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in a crucial match at Anfield on Saturday. This season, Chelsea has failed to live up to expectations and is currently tenth in the Premier League standings.
In their previous match, the Blues defeated Crystal Palace by a decisive 1-0 margin, and they will attempt to repeat that performance this weekend. In contrast, Liverpool is currently in ninth place in the league and has also been in poor form this season.
The Merseyside outfit crushed Wolverhampton Vagabonds by a 1-0 scoreline in the FA Cup this week and will be certain in front of this apparatus.
This season, Liverpool has largely failed to live up to expectations and will need to play their hearts out if they want to finish in the top four. Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, for example, have not yet adapted to the Premier League, so they will need to put in a lot of effort in the coming weeks.
Additionally going through a transition, Chelsea is in desperate need of a boost. At the moment, both teams have a level playing field, so this matchup could end in a draw.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea
Liverpool has won 84 of the 192 games they’ve played against Chelsea, while Chelsea has won 65. Liverpool has a good record against Chelsea. Despite only losing two of their 15 Premier League matches against Chelsea, Liverpool did lose to the Blues at Anfield in March 2021.
Last season, these two teams played each other in the Premier League, and neither team won or lost. There has never been three consecutive league draws in this matchup. In the last 17 Premier League matches between Liverpool and Chelsea, the home team has only won three times.
Chelsea won their previous match against Crystal Palace, but they have only won two of their last ten Premier League games. Liverpool has not lost their first three league games in a calendar year since 1953 when they lost both of their matches this year in the Premier League.
Although Arthur, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, and Virgil van Dijk will not yet be back for Liverpool, Klopp anticipates that Darwin Nunez will return from an unidentified injury in time to face the Blues.
As Fabio Carvalho leaves the field, Nunez’s return should see Cody Gakpo return to the wide position. Kostas Tsimikas was injured at Molineux but was always expected to lose his spot to Andrew Robertson.
