In the A-League on Saturday (January 7), league leaders Melbourne City will take on rivals Western United, who are based in Victoria, at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Following their loss to Sydney last month, the hosts have won both of their league games since then.
In their previous matchup with Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne trailed by a goal in the 16th minute but miraculously rallied to win 3-1. Mathew Leckie equalized in the 18th minute, and league-leading scorer Jamie Maclaren scored twice in the second half to help the defending champions earn their seventh victory of the season.
In contrast, Western’s two-game winning streak was ended by a 1-1 draw against Brisbane Roar. After Carlo Armiento had given Brisbane the lead 50 minutes earlier, Aleksandar Prijovi scored the equalizer in the 78th minute.

Despite having done so in their last nine league games this season, Melbourne has failed to score in three of their last five encounters with Western. Here, the pattern ought to continue. In their last seven encounters with Hearts, Western has scored at least once, and they should do the same here.
They have only lost once in their last five games, showing an improvement in form. In light of the same, a draw might occur.
Prediction: Melbourne City 2-2 Western United
In the A-League, the two teams have met 11 times, with every meeting occurring after 2020. While one game has been settled, the hosts hold a slim 6-4 advantage. It’s interesting to note that the hosts have only won once in their last six meetings with Western, and that victory came in October in Melbourne.
With 19 goals in nine games, Melbourne has the best offensive record in the A-League, while Western has scored 14 goals in ten games. With seven goals conceded in nine games, the hosts have the league’s best defensive record. With 19 goals conceded, Western has the worst defensive record in the competition.
