New York Yankees acquire starter Frankie Montas, and closer Lou Trivino from Oakland Athletics
New York Yankees acquire starter Frankie Montas: According to an announcement made by the New York Yankees on Monday, the team has completed a trade with the Oakland Athletics in order to acquire right-handed starter Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino.
The Yankees are sending the left-handed pitchers Ken Waldichuk and J.P. Sears to the A’s, while the Yankees are sending the right-handed pitcher Luis Medina and the second baseman Cooper Bowman.
According to MLB, the Yankees’ farm system had Waldichuk, who is 24 years old, ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the organization.
The New York Yankees, who lead the American League, had a very active trade deadline. They made several significant additions to their roster, including outfielder Andrew Benintendi and rookie reliever Scott Effross. Additionally, they strengthened an already formidable starting rotation and bullpen by acquiring Montas and Trivino.
Castillo
Following Seattle’s acquisition of right-hander Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds for a package consisting of four prospects earlier this week, the deal for Montas is the second involving a highly sought-after starting pitcher to take place this week.
Since signing with the Red Sox in 2009, Montas has displayed some signs of potential for greatness, despite the fact that he will not be available for free agency until the end of the 2023 season (he is currently 29 years old).
After being traded to the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, he moved to Oakland, where he has flourished over the past six seasons to become the pitcher who has a 3.18 ERA this season with 10433 innings pitched, 109 strikeouts, 28 walks, and 12 home runs allowed.
This season, he has a 3.18 ERA ball with 109 strikeouts, 28 walks, and 12 home runs allowed.
Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees, said that he was “eager to get him in the mix” because of the player’s “level of skill,”, particularly in light of how he has pitched over the past couple of years.
“He’s got the whole toolbox and everything you look for in a top-of-the-rotation guy,” said the coach. Gone out there and demonstrated over the past couple of years that he is a pitcher of that type.”
Montas
After missing a start in the middle of July due to a shoulder ailment, Montas made his comeback with three scoreless innings against Houston, followed by a start in which he allowed two earned runs over the course of five innings.
That was a sufficient number of teams to draw representatives from a wide variety of markets, both large and small.
“I think we’re comfortable with where he’s at shoulder-wise,” Boone said. “I think we’re comfortable with where he’s at.”
Montas will be joining a rotation that has struggled as of late and is led by All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole (9-3, 3.30 ERA) and All-Star pitcher Nestor Cortes (9-3, 2.53 ERA).
Both left-handed Jordan Montgomery and right-handed Jameson Taillon have struggled in their most recent starts, with Montgomery going 0-2 with a 5.36 ERA in his previous eight appearances and Taillon going 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA in his most recent five.
Both right-handed reliever Miguel Castro, who has been sidelined since July 10 with a strained right shoulder, and left-handed starter Luis Severino were placed on the 60-day injured list on Monday. Severino has not pitched since July 13 due to a lat strain, and Castro has been sidelined since July 10 with the same injury.
Domingo German entered the first game of the series against Seattle on Monday night with a career-worst earned run average of 8.22 in his first two starts since returning from a right shoulder impingement.
The Yankees have strengthened their starting rotation by acquiring a starter who has a fastball, slider, and splitter in his arsenal.
Innings
This combination of pitches has been successful for the Yankees throughout the entire season. In 15 of his first 16 starts, Montas pitched at least five innings in each game. The one game in which he did not go at least five innings was the one in which he was hit in the hand by a comebacker and had to leave the game after 12 and a third inning.
Trivino, a right-handed pitcher who is 30 years old, has a record of 1-6 with a 6.47 ERA — which is double the number he had in 2021 — and 10 saves in 13 opportunities.
This year, batters with a right-handed bat have a batting average of.289 against him, while batters with a left-handed bat have a batting average of.392 with nine walks in 60 plate appearances.
Trivino will be joining one of the stronger bullpens in the major leagues, but it is a bullpen that has been struggling recently due to injuries. Zack Britton, Chad Green, and Michael King are all now on the 60-day injured list, and it is anticipated that Green and King will be out for the remainder of the season.
Waldichuk, who is currently pitching at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has a record of 6-3 with a 2.71 earned run average (ERA) overall in 17 starts for two organizations in the Yankees’ minor league system this season. He also has 116 strikeouts in 7613 innings pitched.
This season, Sears, who is 26 years old, has a record of 3-0 with an earned run average of 2.05 in 22 innings pitched for the Yankees in the majors and a record of 1-1 with an earned run average of 1.67 in 43 innings pitched in Triple-A. Medina, who is 23 years old, has a record of 4-3 with an earned run average of 3.38 in 17 starts for Double-A Somerset.
Clarke Schmidt, a right-handed pitcher, was sent down to Scranton by the Yankees, and Carlos Espinal, a right-handed pitcher, was brought up from the RailRiders.
