In an effort to end the AFF Championship on a high note, the Philippines takes on Indonesia on Monday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. With just three points from as many games, the Street Dogs have already been eliminated from the tournament.
In their first match, Josep Ferré’s team defeated Cambodia 3-2, but they bounced back to defeat Brunei 5-1 in their next match. However, Thailand’s 4-0 defeat to the Philippines halted their momentum, and Cambodia’s 5-1 defeat of Brunei the following day confirmed the Philippines’ elimination from the group stage.
Unless Cambodia loses to Thailand, Indonesia will not advance to the semifinals of the championship, so they are fighting for their lives here. With seven points from three games, the Garuda’s Team is in second place, one point ahead of the Angkor Warriors, and they are close to making the last four for the second time in a row.
The Philippines have nothing to lose here and would adore the opportunity to upset the situation before returning home. However, their defense isn’t the best, and they’ve given up goals on a regular basis over the past few months, which may give Indonesia a chance here. The Garuda Team may emerge victorious right away because they will strive for nothing less than a victory. We anticipate them to win in the end.
Prediction: The Philippines 2-3 Indonesia
The teams have met 24 times before, with Indonesia winning 19 of those games and losing only once, a 4-0 defeat in the 2014 AFF Championship. The two teams’ most recent AFF Championship encounters were 0-0 in November 2018 and 2-2 in November 2016, respectively.
So far in the tournament, Indonesia and Thailand are tied for the most goals scored. With the 1-1 attraction to Thailand, Indonesia’s five-game dominating run reached a conclusion yet they stay unbeaten in six at this point.
The Philippines fell to Thailand 4-0, their third loss in four games and sixth in 11 games in 2022. In their last six games, the Philippines have not kept a clean sheet, while Indonesia has only kept one in their last five.
