In Friday’s matchup at Stade 19 Mai 1956, Senegal and Mauritania set their sights on reaching the 2023 African Nations Championship quarterfinals. One of Madagascar or Mozambique, who are also scheduled to face off in the quarterfinals, will face the winner of this tie in the semifinals.
With a convincing 3-0 victory over the Leopards of Congo DR on Sunday evening, Senegal concluded their group stage campaign on a high note. Before Pape Diallo’s goal in the 74th minute and a Baggio Siadi own goal ended the game, Ousmane Diouf’s goal in the first half gave Pape Thiaw’s team the lead.
As a result, the Lions of Teranga won Group B with six points from three matches, two points ahead of Ivory Coast, their closest rivals.
African Nation Championship will tonight be hosting Senegal vs Mauritania. Both teams will be looking to book their place in the last four of the 2023 championship.

They will now have to compete against an opponent who has lost two of the three previous meetings between the teams across all competitions. Senegal now has a golden opportunity to match their best performance ever at this level after exiting the group stage of their previous CHAN appearance.
Senegal 1-0 Mauritania
With a 1-0 victory on Tuesday, Mauritania avoided Mali’s threat and advanced to the knockout stages of the African Nations Championship. At the Miloud Hadefi Stadium, Mamadou Sy’s 53rd-minute opener proved to be the game-winning goal for Amir Abdou’s team.
The Lions of Chinguetti finished first in Group D, two points ahead of Angola, with four points from their two group games. Mauritania will now try to do better at this year’s CHAN after avoiding an early exit for the first time in its history.
Libasse Ngom of Senegal was suspended for the victory over Congo DR, but he could be back on the field on Friday. Cheikh Diouf will continue to play in the attack, despite not scoring for the third time in a row last time out. Maodo Mbaye could sit out this game.
The 31-year-old Mamadou Sy’s availability for Mauritania is currently in doubt due to his injury scare last time out. Yacoub Sidi, a midfielder, will likely be promoted to the starting lineup for the first time since December if Sy is deemed unfit to participate.
