The opening match of the 2022 AFF Championship between Singapore and Myanmar will take place on Saturday at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Jalan Besar. The Lions, making their 14th appearance in the competition, have been assigned to Group B, which also includes Malaysia, Vietnam, and Laos. As part of their preparations for the Championship, Takayuki Nishigaya’s team played three friendlies this month.
The first two ended in 7-3 and 7-1 defeats to Japanese teams, Ryutsu Keizai University FC and YSCC Yokohama, respectively. However, Singapore defeated the Maldives 3-1 in their third and final match. Despite Ibrahim Mahudhee canceling out Ilhan Fandi’s first-half goal, Shawal Anuar’s second-half brace secured the Lions’ victory.
In contrast, Malaysia defeated Myanmar 1-0 in their first match in Yangon. Muhammad Faisal scored the game’s lone goal in the 52nd minute. Even though they haven’t won since 2022, the Chinthe, who are also making their 14th appearance in the competition, will be eager to kick off their campaign with a victory here.

As both teams enter the match after a tumultuous year, Singapore will look to their dominant record against Myanmar as a source of inspiration. Even though the Chinthe is actually ranked two places higher than the Lions, it’s hard to see them winning this game because of their terrible season.
Prediction: Singapore 2-0 Myanmar
There have been 12 past conflicts between the sides, with Singapore winning multiple times and losing just two times to Myanmar. In June 2019 international friendly, Myanmar defeated Singapore 2-1. In their last two meetings, Singapore has defeated Myanmar, including a stunning 6-2 victory in the Asia Cup qualifiers in June of this year.
Myanmar has lost seven of their eight 2022 matches, losing 23 times and scoring only twice, both times against Singapore in a 6-2 defeat. They have also conceded 23 goals. This year, Singapore has only won four of its 11 games.
Having beaten the Maldives in their last experience, Singapore is hoping to enlist consecutive wins interestingly since Spring.
