According to former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, there is now too much Twenty20 cricket played. He feels that Test cricket should be given a little more priority. In a Test series, he batted for at least three games. “T20 is an exhibition, Test cricket is an examination” Clive Lloyd said
In light of the rising popularity of Twenty20 cricket and the emergence of many franchise leagues worldwide, several analysts and former cricket players have expressed concerns over the future of Test cricket.
“I think they’re playing too many T20s and other things right now. A little more Test cricket is something I’d like to see. And if you’re playing Test cricket, I’d like three Test matches or five,” the West Indies icon stated at the Ekam Awards night in Kolkata on Thursday, January 11 as cited by PTI.
“T20 is an exhibition, Test cricket is an examination,” Clive Lloyd said
The captain of the ODI World Cup winning teams in 1975 and 1979 stated that it was not very sensible for teams to go to another country for a mere two Test matches.
“I don’t think the West Indies should make the 12,000-mile trip to Australia for just two Test matches. And it doesn’t make sense. Just like yesterday, it’s all out. Now, the second Test would have demonstrated which of the two sides was superior,” Lloyd said.
“As I have repeatedly stated, Test cricket is an examination, and Twenty20 cricket is an exhibition. It appears that our children are developing the habit of attempting to hit the ball over the net. And it bothers me,” the 79-year-old continued.
Lloyd acknowledged that Twenty20 cricket is an attractive format. He also stated that Test cricket shouldn’t suffer as a result.
“I don’t believe there was a problem with the pitch,” Clive Lloyd said on the Cape Town surface.
After the India-South Africa Test ended in 642 balls, the shortest Test match in history, concerns were raised over the conditions of the Newlands surface.
The pitch was deemed “unsatisfactory” by the ICC. Lloyd pointed out that Aiden Markram, a hitter, made a century on the wicket. He did not see any issues with it.
On the first day of the Test, South Africa was bowled out for 55, and India won by seven wickets.
