Cup of Davis: Canada defeats Australia to win the Davis Cup for the first time, becoming the first nation to do so. Canada defeated Australia to win the Davis Cup in Malaga.

Denis Shapovalov defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles match to make up for his semi-final loss.
The world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime, a teammate for Canada, then defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4 to give his nation an unbreakable 2-0 lead.

Auger-Aliassime stated, “The feelings are difficult to describe.”

“We’ve all dreamed of this moment, all of us here. It is truly a fulfillment of a dream.”
It was only the second Davis Cup final for Canada.

They lost their first tournament, in 2019, to Spain led by Rafael Nadal, but they won the World Cup of Tennis on Sunday, defeating Australia, which has won the tournament 28 times.

In the first set, the world number six had to hold off three break points, but in the eighth game, he broke de Minaur with a powerful overhead smash and won the final game with an ace.

In the second set, Auger-Aliassime defended two break points in the second game and pumped his fist when he broke the Australian with a beautiful forehand winner in the third. He kept his composure throughout the match.

Before Kokkinakis could score a game, Shapovalov, ranked 18th in the world, jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Shapovalov, on the other hand, broke early in the second set to set his country up for a historic victory after comfortably winning the first set.

In their singles match, Auger-Aliassime was forced to defend three early break points against world number 24 De Minaur.

In the eighth game, he finally broke himself, and after winning the first set with an ace, he held off two more break points to win the title for Canada.

“Each of us grew as players on our own; “Over the years, we got better and better,” Auger-Aliassime continued.

“It’s never easy to pull through,” although “we’re more prepared for these types of moments.”
