When Argentina lost to eventual champion France in the round of 16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni and Pablo Aimar took over as interim coaches.
During their crucial Group C matchup with Mexico, Argentina assistant coach Pablo Aimar broke down in tears after Lionel Messi’s opening goal revived La Albiceleste’s World Cup hopes.
Because the Mexico game was a must-win match after Argentina’s shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia, Aimar’s reaction showed that the South American team’s emotions were running high. However, Lionel Messi pulled off a magical moment to assist his team in winning the game and getting the campaign back on track.
Aimar, Messi’s childhood idol who also played in the semi-final against Croatia, provided a stark contrast, however.

Aimar was attempting to contain his emotions, unable to do so, but the cameras captured him smiling. Aimar never had the chance to reach a final as a player, but now as a member of the coaching staff, he does.
