Melbourne and Western have both won two of their last three games, and they’ll want to keep that momentum going. In their last four encounters with Western United, which has scored seven goals, Melbourne has only managed to score one goal.
This season, both teams have had trouble. Western appears to be in with a chance of victory given their recent history.
Prediction: Western 2-1 Melbourne
In competitions, the two teams have clashed 12 times. Western has six successes to Melbourne’s four, while two games have finished in draws. They last played each other in the Australia Cup in August, when Western won the first round 2-1. Western took the lead thanks to an own goal by George Timotheou, but Melbourne equalized through Jake Brimmer.
Lachlan Wales scored the winner in the 53rd minute. In the final series’ two-legged semi-final, they met. Western advanced to the final, which they won 2-0, with a 4-1 victory. The two teams have scored more than 2.5 goals in three of their six previous meetings.
Western’s defensive record is the worst in the A-League, allowing 18 goals in eight games. In the meantime, Melbourne has surrendered eight objectives in seven games, which is the joint-third-best protecting record in the opposition.
It’s Match Day on a warm Boxing Day.
