Where is the 2022 US Open held? Where Flushing Meadows is, how big it is, how old it is, and how many tennis courts it has. Later this month, the 2022 US Open will be held at Flushing Meadows. All of the world’s top tennis players are expected to attend. It will be the last Grand Slam tournament of the year and will be held at one of the most famous sports venues in the world.

Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu will return to defend their singles titles in 2021, along with Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams. However, Novak Djokovic’s status is uncertain because of the travel policy for people who haven’t had the Covid vaccine.

Here’s everything you need to know about the venue, like where it is, how many people it can hold, its history, and how many tennis courts it has.

    Flushing Meadows Location

Located in northern Queens, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is a popular city park in New York. As a result, it is most often called “Flushing Meadows.” The park is home to two well-known sports facilities and a number of other things to see and do. Citi Field, where the New York Mets play baseball, and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where the US Open is held, are the two facilities.

There are a total of 22 courts inside the 46-and-a-half-acre building, and 12 more are in the park next door. In addition, there are three stadiums inside the building. Arthur Ashe Stadium, which can hold 23,200 people, is the largest tennis venue in the world.

The other two main places to watch the games are the Louis Armstrong Stadium, which can hold 14,000 people, and the Grandstand, which can hold 8,125 people. Up until 2020, the 33 courts had DecoTurf acrylic surfaces with a cushioned surface. In 2020, the venue switched to Laykold surfaces.

    History of US Open venue

Billie Jean King was once the best tennis player in the world and won 39 major titles. The tennis center is named after her. King is also known as a leader in the fight for gender equality and social justice. She is often remembered for the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match she played in 1973 against retired men’s pro player Bobby Riggs. The Women’s Tennis Association was also started by King.

He won three Grand Slam singles titles and was the first African-American to play for the United States in the Davis Cup, so it’s fitting that Arthur Ashe Stadium bears his name. Since 1978, when the National Tennis Center opened, the US Open has been held there.

After rumors that the tournament could be moved elsewhere, the site was improved in 1995 by adding more land to the center. A $550 million renovation of the center started in 2013, and part of it was putting a retractable roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Before the 2017 US Open, the roof was put on.

The new Grand Stand court opened in 2016, and the Louis Armstrong Stadium, which also has a retractable roof, made its debut at the 2018 US Open. The building was named after Billie Jean King for the first time in 2006. It has also been used for professional basketball games but is still primarily used for tennis.
