Why aren’t all players at the Commonwealth Games 2022 given a sports psychologist? – Here’s what experts have to say!

Why aren’t all players at the CWG 2022: The clock has started for the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG’22). From July 28 to August 8, the games will be held in Birmingham. But even before the match began, Indian players were having both physical and mental problems. Neeraj Chopra dropped out of the CWG’22 because of physical injuries. Just a few days before the event, Lovlina Borgohain said she had been the victim of “mental harassment.” This raises a big question for health experts on the ground.

Why aren't all players at the CWG 2022: The clock has started for the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG'22).

In a conversation with Dr. Prateek Gupta

Dr. Prateek Gupta had a lot to say about this. He works at Safdarjung Development Area’s Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre with Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.

“Usually, teams and players are assigned sports medicine expert, paramedics, physiotherapist and masseurs.” But he also said, “Sports psychologists are also important for a player but they are not always provided by the authority.”

Psychologists, also called “mental conditioning coaches,” shouldn’t be the ones who come for 15 days. Because when you come for 15 days, all you do is share your experience. So, whether or not a player gets a psychologist depends on many factors. One of these is whether or not that player is already seeing an expert.

“If a player already has a psychologist, then there is no need for another expert. But if he/she does not have one then it is important for a psychologist to be there on-ground. If the mental conditioning coach is constantly with the player, he can understand what are the areas which are affecting his sport,” Dr. Gupta said.

“Usually, the sports medicine expert and orthopaedic are one but for a few games, the authority provides different experts.” he further added.

More about the various specialists in sports

    Physiotherapist in sports

Physiotherapists help players who are hurt, sick, or have a disability by getting them to move and exercise, giving them manual therapy, educating them, and telling them what to do. As a result, they help players deal with pain and stay healthy. In addition, these professionals help to encourage growth and recovery, which helps people stay at work and stay as independent as possible. They also ensure this fitness is not short-lived.

    Paramedics in sports

Paramedics play a big part in getting an injured player to the hospital. But they play many other crucial roles on the field. For example, when there are many people at a sporting event, the paramedic needs to know what care and transportation key participants expect. In addition, the paramedic must know about schedules for events and plans specific to the field of play (FoP).

    Psychologists in sports

Dr. Gupta talked about how important it is for all sports in India to have a mental conditioning coach. He said that having someone who is an expert in that area helps players deal with their situation better.
