The home team has had a nearly disastrous season, which led to the removal of manager Bruno Lage and the appointment of Julen Lopetegui, a former manager at Sevilla, as the new manager. In their first cup match, they defeated Preston North End 2-1 before defeating Leeds United, another Premier League team, 1-0 at home in the second round.
This week, the Wolves will play their first competitive game under Lopetegui and will want to get off to a winning start. Gillingham started off their cup run with a 2-0 away win over Wimbledon, with Mikael Mandron and Jordan Green getting on the scoresheet in extra time prior to beating Exeter City on punishments in the subsequent round.
After that, they played Brentford, a team from the Premier League, in the third round. In regular time, they played to a 1-1 draw, but in the penalty shootout, they won 6-5. The visitors last advanced this far in the League Cup in the 1996–97 season, and this week, they will try to prove themselves against another top-flight team.

After losing four of their previous six games, the Wolves are now on a streak of consecutive games without a loss. They have lost three of their last four home games and will be hoping to further develop their home structure beginning this week.
With their most recent victory, Gillingham ended a four-game losing streak and will now attempt to extend it. However, they could lose here given how poorly they have performed on the road this season.
Prediction: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Gillingham
Gillingham and Wolves have met fifteen times in the past. Seven of those games have been won by the hosts, while only one has been won by the visitors. Between the two teams, there have been two draws. After winning four of their previous five games, the hosts have only won one of their last four in this matchup.
Wolves scored just eight league goals, while Gillingham scored six, making them the two teams in the top five tiers of English football with the fewest goals scored. This season, the Gills have only scored four points on the road in League Two. Only Colchester United has obtained fewer goals. This season, the Wanderers have scored eight of their ten Premier League points at home.
