Girona and Rayo Vallecano will wrap up the year on Thursday (December 29) when they get down to business at the Estadi Montilivi in the Spanish La Liga. The team led by Andoni Iraola is looking to maintain their recent streak of five consecutive victories at home across all competitions.
In a shocking 2-1 defeat to lower-tier CP Cacereno on Thursday, Girona was eliminated from the Copa del Rey. That came after they had an impressive run during the 2022 FIFA World Cup break, winning two and drawing one in four friendlies.
Now, Girona will try to get back to where they were in La Liga. They are currently 13th in the league standings and have won two games in a row. In the meantime, after 120 minutes of goallessness, Vallecano defeated Atlético Saguntino 3-1 on penalties to advance to the Copa del Rey third round.
They will now turn their attention to La Liga, where they haven’t lost in six games since losing 3-1 to Almeria on October 8. Vallecano is currently eighth in the league with 22 points from 14 games, but with all three points this weekend, they could move up to fourth.

Girona will enter this game still reeling from their Copa del Rey defeat in search of a morale-boosting victory. Even though Vallecano has been doing well in La Liga, they have only won one of their last five road games. Despite this, neither team will be able to compete and will settle for a share of the spoils.
Prediction: Girona 1-1 Rayo Vallecano
Vallecano has a better record in this matchup, having won eight of the previous seventeen encounters. During that time, Girona has won five games while sharing the spoils four times. Since their 3-1 defeat in September 2019, Vallecano hasn’t lost in their last three trips to the Estadi Montilivi, winning two games and drawing one.
Girona’s Copa del Rey campaign ended in the second round, and they have not won in their last three competition appearances. In their last six La Liga matches, Vallecano has won three games and drawn one.
